Developmental Process and the Enigma of Change in Psychodynamic Therapy

Friday and Saturday, March 7-8, 1997

Course Description

This conference addresses what causes change in psychotherapy. From thestudies of parent-infant interactions and psychotherapy with adults andchildren, the Change Process Study Group of Boston has developed a theoryof change that emphasizes the crucial importance of "reordering theintersubjective environment." The interactive process that brings aboutsuch a reordering will be elaborated from the perspective of both normaldevelopment and psychotherapeutic change The steps involved in this processwill be described in detail. Examples from infant development andpsychotherapy will be provided.

A number of internationally renowned psychoanalysts, who have writtenextensively on the theory of psychotherapeutic change, will offer their ownformulations, as well as discuss the theory of change presented by theChange Process Study Group of Boston that focuses on reordering theintersubjective environment. The intent throughout will be to provide aforum for the exchange of ideas that will lead to a more comprehensiveunderstanding of what facilitates change in psychotherapy.

The educational objective and emphasis of this conference will be theintegration of theory and clinical practice. Case material from infantdevelopment and psychotherapy will demonstrate how the concept ofreordering the intersubjective environment within an interactive dyadtranlates into actual practice.
